Bintulu is a coastal town in the central region of Sarawak, located 610 kilometres northeast of Kuching. It is famous for its golden beach and Irrawaddy dolphins and has a reputation for producing the best ‘belacan’ (shrimp paste) in the state. The population is made up primarily of Iban, Chinese, Melanau and Malay, Kedayan, Kenyah, Bidayuh and Punan. The town is the gateway to the hinterland of Bakun where the second-tallest concrete-faced rockfill dam in the world is – the Bakun Dam.
